Great Moments in Terrible Ideas: A Social Network for Your Company?!

Saw this CRM piece recently on the value or not of social networks to companies..

I see what the guy Jim Berkowitz is saying, and it’s something I’ve read elsewhere from Lars at Headshift:

“When we discuss social networking with clients we typically find that it is not an internal Facebook platform that makes the biggest difference for knowledge workers, it is simple tools for “information networking” – which is social in nature too. Once everybody can publish to the relevant intranet groups, produce their own RSS feeds, share internal and external content and interact with others’ content through comments and tags you have globalised the chat around the water cooler.”

All I’d say is that for some organisations with a global membership for example a Facebook-type ‘container’ might make it easier for the average professional to grasp and get on board, it’s more tangible if you like. Whatever, I’m certainly no edge-of-chaos web 2.0 expert. Be good to see more debate on it for sure.

Here’s an interesting post that I found in Bnet Intercom blog by Jake Swearingen, Great Moments in Terrible Ideas: A Social Network for Your Company:

Kris Dunn’s HR Capitalist blog is normally pretty spot-on. But his idea of experimenting with a social network for his company is cute but dumb, like when puppies try to run and keep falling over. From his blog:

Social Networking (think products like FaceBook and MySpace) should have positive impact inside a company. Linking employees to other teammates they’ve never met, sharing thoughts, interests and news inside a social network sounds cool. Surely that translates to increased satisfaction, retention and even engagement – right?

We’ll see….

Here’s how the project will work. We’re going to launch a social network inside our company, including the ability to set up your own home page, a blog hosted by me with multiple contributors, youtube video capablity, widget functionality, etc.

Internal social networks are silly for a number of reasons. But let’s look at Dunn’s stated goal – increased employee communication leading to increased satisfaction, retention, and even (fingers crossed!) engagement — and why a social network will fall flatter than a skateboarding soccer mom…

1. Communication via social networks is inefficient. Recently, a friend from college got in touch with me about doing some freelance work. We’d lost touch, and he found me via Facebook. Fantastic, right? But as soon as I got his initial message, we moved our conversation over to email. Why? Because it’s one less step to communicate, allowed us to bring other people in on the conversation easily, and to pass documents back and forth with greater ease.

2. Social networks lose engagement over time. People get bored with social networks. It happened to Friendster, it’s happening to MySpace, and will happen to Facebook. People like the initial rush of collecting friends like baseball cards, but once their social network is established, user engagement drops off unless a steady stream of content is provided. A company social network probably won’t offer online Scrabble to add stickiness, and so is doomed to become a depressing virtual ghost town.

3. Social networks are, well, social. During the heyday of MySpace, the most interesting part of a person’s profile was their Top 8 Friends, a quick way to see who liked whom the most. Social networks are about selective connection, but a work environment can’t be. While a social network would ideally break employees out of their normal silos, social networking is all about digitally cementing the connections you already have, not establishing new ones.

There are some Web 2.0 clichés that work great for companies – wikis and internal blogs can and do offer benefits, particularly for larger organizations – but social networking, at least how we think of social networking right now, isn’t one of them.

Earthquake epicenter at Market Rasen

My aunt and uncle, who live in the village of Lissington which is but a stone’s throw from Market Rasen, the epicentre of last night’s earthquake (the UK’s largest for over 20 years), reported the following via SMS:

“They ran outside as the whole house shook & everything rattled & loud ‘roar’ like train. Still no damage.” Underground rumbling..crack in driveway opened and went back together again. Took 10 seconds. All across the fields the lights were on, the whole of Lincolnshire lit up!

How Pakistan crashed YouTube

By SHAUN WATERMAN
UPI Homeland and National Security Editor

WASHINGTON, Feb. 25 (UPI) — Pakistani authorities’ efforts to block access to the video-sharing Web site YouTube from Internet addresses in their own country effectively shut down the site altogether at the weekend, disrupting access to it by would-be visitors from all over the world.

PS: Ironically (29 Feb info) I’ve just found out that the current server sitting neatly in its rackspace now used for ion was originally the youtube development server.

Facebook attack!

Yesterday I dipped into my Facebook profile to find my pic had been replaced with something somewhat obscene. Yikes! Funny, as I’d just been in a brief discussion on social network security and risks on Stuart King’s risk management blog.

I reported the issue to Facebook.com, who sent back an auto-reply asking me to ‘stand by’. Be interesting to read their response.

PS: I took the opportunity to change my Facebook password, and my pic to a monkey.

PPS: 27 Feb, haven’t heard anymore from Facebook. Though when tried to login today my new password didn’t work. So After repeated attepts I had to request a new password, the link for which I am waiting for..

Yep, now arrived. I couldn’t get my new password, as due to (unannounced) a migration of my webmail by Charlie the email was stuck in cyberspace;-)

Mobile social networking — the next big thing

OK, I’ve read it on the blogs, now I believe it as I’ve seen it on a Gumtree job advert:

“Are you an entrepreneurial CTO (or CTO want-to-be)? do you want to be part of the next facebook/bebo/myspace designed specifically for mobile users? If so, we want to hear from you.”

Enterprise Car Hire

You call Enterprise Rent-A-Car hire before the local office opens and you get re-routed to the national call centre which provides excellent service. You call later to the local office and no one picks up for the 1 min you could be bothered to hang on.

You call the second local office at the other end of the hire and they also don’t pick up. So why don’t Enterprise invest a bit of cash into a call system which automatically re-routes calls after 45 seconds just to be pushy to national office, even when the local office is open?

You do the math or ROI or whatever you call it?

PS: So I went online and got the national call centre number, and in the process wrote this;-)

PPS: I then called the national call number, but got bored with the options, and called the local number, which this time re-routed me to someone in a few secs, and booked a car for
