Twitter Compared to IM, Email and Forums

Nice analysis from Ross Mayfield on IM, email and forums vs Twitter. Liked a couple of points where ppl point out that with Twitter there’d no moderator to step in. Also occurred to me that status updates In LinkedIn aren’t so far from Twitter in their informal appeal:

Yesterday on Twitter, I asked three questions:

How Twitter differs from IM, email and Forums is important because new users always compare things to what they know. Obviously there is a sample bias, the sheer diversity and pure gems in the below replies tell us something about what’s new.

Cmypitch Live Event received coverage on the BBC

The good people at cmypitch, which I came across last year, have had an investor event which has featured on the BBC:

http://cmypitch.com/small-medium-businesses/blogs/show/520/cmypitch_live_makes_bbc_one

Not suprisingly one of the private investors on the video says that its a good time for investors with cash as entrepreneurs looking for cash are having to be more realistic in what they can command.

cmypitch.com provides services and networking for UK small businesses, connecting entrepreneurs with each other, investors and service providers.

Cambridge Alumni Magazine points

Reading the latest edition of CAM — Cambridge Alumni Magazine — I noticed a few articles of relevance. With the recent Daily Mail piece on the health dangers of social networking sites to children’s brains it was good to see another perspective from anthropologist Dr Kathleen Richardson arguing in effect that Facebook is good for you as it supports the way we now live our lives. Nice analysis of the controversy by FreshNetworks’ Matt Rhodes who knows a thing or two about social networks, and who’s an alumni too.

Another article which caught my attention was a piece by cricketer Ed Smith on the relevance of history studies to the sport of cricket. While he rightly mocks the value of a history and class analysis and its relevance to cricket it may be worth his while reading CIMA President Aubrey Joachim’s blog on cricket’s problems: “Cricket is no longer a game and neither are most sporting contests in the current blatantly commercial environment that has engulfed every human endeavour. Look at football, basketball, baseball, motor racing, golf, tennis, cycling and even athletics. Cricket is not an end in itself but merely a means to an end. That end is commercial value proposition.”

Finally, reading Oliver Burkeman’s analysis of the potential impact of Obama to change American politics I couldn’t help noticing a typo, where he says while he could prove a legendary president that there’s “every chance he could quickly founder”. I think that should be “flounder”? Typos can be fun though. I once was featured in the Daily Telegraph’s Peterborough column after mixing up the word “prosperity” with “posterity” whilst working at the rather charming Diss Express. Ah, the memories.

lol theory

The theory that the internet phrase lol, meaning “laugh out loud”, can be placed at any part in any sentence and make said sentence lose all credibilty and seriousness.

ex 1
Doc: We need to operate on your colon lol, you have cancer.

ex 2
Jesus: Take this all of you and eat it, it is my body, lol.

ex 3
Me: Will you marry me? Lol.

ex 4

Me: I just had a great idea to make a million bucks, lol.

^Lol theory in action

Microsoft asks for cash back

MS sacks 1,400 workers. Miscalculates the severance payemnts. Asks for money back. Here’s the result of the poll on ZDnet asking…

What would you do?

  • Forget that. I’m out of work and need every dollar I can get. Let them sue me if they want it back. (70%)
  • It’s not my money. I’d write the check and send it back. (22%)
  • I’m torn. I don’t know what I would do. (8%)

Medicsight PLC Restructures Management Team

News from my former workplace: Medicsight/Medicexchange/MGT. Allan Rowley steps up as CEO of Medicsight. Plus from Aunt Minnie news of MGT’s re-scheduling around its next shareholder meeting. As I said when I worked for the MGT guys, it’s really just about managing complexity so reckon they’ll get it sorted pretty soon. Varian Medical Systems Has Received CE Mark for Proton Therapy System btw.

NEW YORK, Feb. 19 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ — Medicsight PLC, a subsidiary of MGT Capital Investments, Inc. (NYSE-A: MGT) and an industry leader in the development of Computer-Aided Detection (CAD) and image analysis software, which assists radiologists in the early detection of disease, today announces the following restructuring of its management team effective March 19, 2009.

Allan Rowley, currently Chief Financial Officer, becomes Chief Executive Officer; David Sumner, currently Chief Executive Officer, becomes Executive Chairman; and Tim Paterson-Brown becomes a non-executive Director of Medicsight. Mr. Paterson-Brown will remain as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of MGT Capital Investments.

As Chief Executive, Allan will drive forward a revised plan focused on increasing revenues from existing products and streamlining all areas of the business. This will be an ongoing process throughout the year. Allan also takes charge of the financial and operational performance of the Company.

Allan has been CFO of Medicsight since 2006. Previously he worked for ComMedica Limited, a medical software company specialising in Picture Archiving & Communication System (“PACS”) software. Before joining ComMedica, Allan was revenue controller and the director of European Finance at Bea Systems, a NASDAQ-listed software company. Allan has several years of experience in public accounting in the United Kingdom and United States with Arthur Andersen and Ernst & Young, respectively.

Allan will be supported by Troy Robinson who has been promoted to Chief Financial Officer, although this is not initially a Board position. Troy joined Medicsight in February 2007 as Group Financial Controller. Prior to this he was the Finance Manager for IVAX Pharmaceuticals and HP Foods. Troy is an associate of the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants.

As Executive Chairman, David Sumner will determine the overall strategy of the Company and will ensure that this strategy is agreed and effectively implemented. In addition, David will lead the promotion of best practice and the highest standards of corporate governance.

Mr. Sumner commented: “We see 2009 as a pivotal year for the Company with the expected U.S. and Japanese regulatory approvals around the corner. Medicsight, with its strong year end cash position of 18 million pounds Sterling is in an excellent position to grow robust future revenues from these two strategic territories that already use CT Colonography routinely in the detection and management of colorectal cancer. The structural changes to our management team will enable me personally to focus on international developments and strategic partner discussions as part of our global drive for excellence and improvement of shareholder value. Allan’s focus is to continue to help increase revenues, embark on streamlining the Company, and maximizing all efforts at this critical stage of the Medicsight’s development. We look forward to him working in this new capacity.”

Mr. Paterson-Brown commented, “I look forward to taking on my new role as a non-executive director of Medicsight, as this will allow me to dedicate more time to MGT Capital. The current economic market has recently opened up several opportunities in the healthcare technology space. In order to take their businesses to the next level, many healthcare IT companies with exciting new technologies are looking for the type of investment and management experience MGT offers.”

Facebook still appears to be in trouble

I see Facebook has changed its terms of service.

And set up a group for discussion of Rights and Responsibilities.

So it’s a shame one of the dicussion threads on display appears to be racist in nature.

I’ve left a comment on Mark Zuckerberg’s blog post suggesting it requires actioning. It’s now 05:20 p-alto time.

Stop press:

  • Via Twitter Stow Boyd reports that “Facebook backs away from change in TOS, restores old TOS until they figure out what to do – http://bit.ly/bCLId“. It’s now 06:14 p-alto time.
  • Dennis Howlett’s take on all this FB critique: but why do Google and Apple get a free pass? It’s now 06:22 p-alto time.
  • Daily Telegraph journalist Kate Day’s take on the apparent Facebook climb-down, with a quote from @CannonGod who I claim to know! It’s now 07:12 p-alto time.
  • Looks like they’ve taken down the racist discussion I noticed. Sure has led to more comment on FB.
  • @yojibee “Ladies & Gentlemen #facebookTOS group just crossed the 100k treshold!”
  • Latest (19th Feb) commentary from Dennis Howlett on how this has all played out.
  • Discussion by experts on NY Times on Facebook’s faux pas.

On Facebook, People Own and Control Their Information?

I saw this today:

“Zuckerberg is saying, “Trust us.” But it is difficult to trust a company that is stripping users of rights they’ve become accustomed to, even if hardly any of them ever actually asserted those rights in practice”. And did this:

I've deactivated my Facebook account

I've deactivated my Facebook account

Not surprising in one way as their backed by some big money that need a return on their investment. Nice acid test for Mr Zuckerberg. Here’s his response on Facebook. I guess the pressure’s on.

Hmm, Perez Hilton doesn’t like Facebook either so I’m in good company:

logo_facebook__opt1.jpg

We’re so glad we’ve never uploaded any of our stuff onto Facebook!

You Facebook users are SCREWED.

Did you know that everything you’ve loaded up into your profile (personal pictures, etc.) belongs to Facebook, even after you’ve closed your account?

That’s what it says in the Terms of Service you agreed to when you opened your account, apparently.

The Consumerist recently uncovered this disturbing info and it’s causing quite a stir.

So, what does this mean?

Basically, Facebook can do whatever the hell they want with YOUR STUFF.

And, they can do so WITHOUT your permission.

For example, they can license your personal pictures out to companies, make a shizzle of money and don’t have to give you a dime.

Sounds really, really shitty and sooo shady!!!!!

PBR on the up
